Add tons of fun to Halloween this year with this DIY Paint a Pumpkin Favor Kit for kids!
Last year our neighbor “Boo’d” us in October. We walked out the front door to find a bucket with a few little Halloween favors and a bunch of candy. And it was so fun. So I wanted to think of a little twist on this popular tradition of leaving a Halloween treat at the doorstep of friends and neighbors.
But I wanted to avoid food for a couple of reasons. One is that it is often still hot in October here and so that makes for the potential of a melted chocolate mess. And the second reason is because we get so many treats and sugar in October. Of course we indulge in some extra treats but I love having an alternative crafty activity for the kids.
A few years ago, a friend of mine introduced me to painting pumpkins with kids. We never did this when I was a kid so I was new to the painted pumpkin party. And you know what? Kids adore painting pumpkins. Mine look forward to it every year.
So the DIY Paint a Pumpkin kit idea was born from this activity. The kits give each child everything they need to paint their own pumpkin at home. Spooky and creepy or sweet and pretty? The kids decide! This activity is great for toddlers through elementary aged kids.

DIY Paint A Pumpkin Kit
Making a DIY paint a pumpkin kit is simple and easy and the kids will love it.
Inside the kids will find everything that they need to paint the perfect pumpkin!
Materials:
- Small Pumpkins
- Empty Paint Pots
- Paint
- Paintbrush
- Black Crinkle Paper
- Clear Favor Bags
- Orange Raffia or Ribbon
I got the pumpkins at a local pumpkin patch for a little under $1 each, the paint pots are on Amazon, and everything else was from the Dollar Tree except for the paint. I always have lots of paint on hand, so I just used what I had to fill the pots.
The orange Raffia was from the Dollar Spot at Target.
Make The Paint a Pumpkin Favor Bags
To make the favors, place a little bit of the black crinkle paper shreds in the bottom of the clear bag.
The empty paint pots can easily be cut apart with sharp scissors. I put 3 pods in each DIY Paint a Pumpkin kit.
Then add a mini pumpkin, paint brush and 3 paint pods filled with paint.
Then you will want to print the Free Gift Tag (Below) and attach it to the bag and close the bag with the raffia.

Trim the tags, punch a hole and attach them to the DIY Paint a Pumpkin kits.
Where To Use These Halloween Kits
DIY Paint a Pumpkin Kit favors are great as an alternative to “Boo’ing” your neighbors.
They are also so cute for Halloween school or Mother’s Day Out parties. And since they are Teal Pumpkin approved, no worries about kiddos with allergies!
We are even going to do these as Birthday party favors for my 2 year old son’s October birthday.
I love that they are a non-candy and no junk favor option.

In case you have never painted pumpkins, here are my two living their best life! They spent quite a while painting these little beauties yesterday.

This is such a fun idea! I love it because it is a fun alternative to candy, and it will last so much longer than candy too!

What a clever gift! Love that this pumpkin painting craft allows kids to be creative but is simple enough for non creative parents!
